Dr. Doyin Okupe’s life was a tapestry woven with threads of medicine, politics, and public service. Born on March 22, 1952, in Iperu, Ogun State, Nigeria, he was the son of Chief Matthew Adekoya Okupe, a banker. Dr. Okupe’s early education took place at St. Jude’s School in Lagos and Igbobi College, before he pursued a degree in medicine at the University of Ibadan.

In the medical field, Dr. Okupe co-founded the Royal Cross Medical Centre in Lagos, where he served as the Managing Director. His contributions to healthcare were significant, but his ambitions extended beyond medicine. He ventured into politics, becoming the National Publicity Secretary of the National Republican Convention (NRC) and later serving as a media assistant to President Olusegun Obasanjo. His political journey continued as he became the Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to President Goodluck Jonathan.

Dr. Okupe’s political career was marked by both achievements and controversies. In 2022, he was appointed as the Director-General of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign for the 2023 election. However, he stepped down following a court conviction over alleged money laundering. Despite these challenges, Dr. Okupe remained a prominent figure in Nigerian politics.

His battle with cancer was a significant part of his later years. Diagnosed with prostate cancer 16 years ago, he later developed sarcoma in his right shoulder. Despite seeking treatment in Israel, his condition did not improve as hoped. Dr. Okupe’s health deteriorated significantly in the weeks leading up to his demise, and he passed away on March 7, 2025, at the age of 72

Dr. Okupe’s legacy is multifaceted. He was a dedicated physician, a passionate politician, and a public servant who left an indelible mark on Nigerian society. He is survived by his wife, Aduralere Okupe, and several children, including Ditan and Bolu. His life story serves as a testament to his resilience, dedication, and the impact he had on both the medical and political landscapes of Nigeria.
