Several individuals suspected of removing sewage manhole covers on highways in Abuja have been apprehended by security agencies. Efforts are ongoing to capture their collaborators, particularly those purchasing the stolen manhole covers.
Following directives from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, relevant stakeholders are diligently working to halt this vandalism. The public will be updated on progress in due course.
Minister Wike expressed his dismay that some Nigerians would engage in such dangerous activities, endangering road users by removing and selling sewage manhole covers. He vowed that the government would take all necessary actions to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Wike emphasized the tragedy of public funds being used to provide amenities for Nigerians, only for these amenities to be stolen and sold by criminally minded individuals. He highlighted the indifference of these criminals to the dangers their actions pose to fellow citizens.
The FCT Minister also extended his gratitude to Nigerians, particularly the individual who recorded the viral video exposing the vandalism. He praised this act as a demonstration of the patriotism that Nigeria needs.
In addition to the arrests, security agencies have increased patrols and surveillance in areas prone to such vandalism. They are also collaborating with local communities to identify and report suspicious activities. The government is considering stricter penalties for those found guilty of such crimes to deter future incidents.
